Parents have the power to shape their child's future, and in Colorado they have free help.

Raising a newborn can be pretty daunting at times. But a Colorado non-profit provides Bright Beginnings for children and their parents. This week's 7Everyday Hero is one of many volunteers providing Colorado children a "Bright Beginning."

Volunteers like Betty Wigington helped the Bright Beginnings group reach 13,000 families statewide last year. A child's brain grows more rapidly in the first three years of life than any other time. So during that critical time, Bright Beginnings provides free in-home visits. If they can get into the homes and with the parents early on and help guide them -- in terms of reading with them, teaching them words, talking to them all the time -- if they can teach parents that at an early age, then they'll be better off later in life.

Betty Wigington has done more than 200 of these home visits. She's a mom, a grandmother, and a retired nurse. Betty loves the kids and the babies. She knows the materials like the back of her hand and she has a lot of experience. When Betty sits with the parents and gives tips and suggestions, they know they're tried and true.
