THORNTON, Colo. -- If you’ve ever thought about volunteering at your neighborhood schools, this week’s 7Everyday Heroes are proof that it’s not only a big help to the school but rewarding for the volunteers as well.Diane and Jerry Stevenson volunteer every school day at Thornton’s Federal Heights Elementary School. If there’s something to be done, they have it covered. They do most of the copying and help teachers with their displays; they make books; they do all the laminating, as well as making sure all the machines are stocked; they even sharpen pencils. All of this frees the teachers so they can be better and have time to do the things that really need doing to get the classes ready.
The Stevensons’ grandson goes to school at Federal Heights, so they know how hard the teachers work. They had two kids who were kind of rowdy, and are happy to report that one is now a police officer and the other works for the fire department.
