DENVER -- There are thousands of Coloradans who are homeless. Many have jobs, others support families, and thanks to 7Everyday Heroes Don and Cheri Gallegos they also have a place they can call "home," if only for part of each day. "We call it their home and we say you're very welcome here and we love you here. I call them all my children," said Cheri Gallegos.
Father Woody's Haven of Hope in Denver is a dream come true. The late Father Charles Woodrich dedicated his life to helping the homeless. After years of operating out of an old house, Father Woody's is now serving the homeless from a new building. The center's executive director, Kathleen Cronan told 7NEWS, "If it weren't for Don and Cheri we wouldn't be in this building today."Father Woody was a mentor for volunteers Don and Cheri Gallegos."One statement I will never forget he said, 'We got 80 percent of the people who we're serving out there are veterans.' He said, 'They didn't give their bodies but they gave their minds,'" said Don.Cheri said, "After he passed away I said to myself, 'Someday, there's going to be a building with your name it, with the way you wanted them to be treated.' And it took me 16 years, but here it is."In addition to the 8,000 meals served each month, Father Woody's provides clothing, a laundry service, even hot showers. "The whole idea behind this is to give them back some dignity," said Don.Father Woody had a motto: "We are here to serve, not judge."Father Woody's Haven of Hope is a place he would have been proud of, a made possible by volunteers, and 7Everyday Heroes Don and Cheri Gallegos. To learn more about Father Woody's Haven of Hope in Denver, click here.
